Coonoor History / History of Coonoor

The Nilgiri Hills were dominated by the Toda tribe since ages. The beautiful Coonoor became a tourist hub in the 19th century when the British made it a popular hill resort. The cool weather conditions provided soothing relief from the scorching summer heat. As a result, the British fell in love with this place and in the year 1820 ,the first bunglow was built here. Gradually ,its popluarity grew and the British elite came up with numerous settlements in the picturesque hill.It was the colonial rulers who introduced tea plantation in the quiet hill town which is perhaps the lifeline of the local populace today.

Weather and Climate of Coonoor

Coonoor famous for its delicate beauty of scenary remains cool throughout the year. The weather of the second largest hill station in the equally picturesque Nilgiris is milder than Ooty, a popular hill station situated nearby.

Summer begins in March and continues till May with temperature hovering around 15°C to 25°C. This is the most pleasant time to enjoy the dramatic landscape views all around and for indulging in exciting tourist activities.

The monsoon season of Coonoor starts from June and stretches till September characterized by mild to medium rainfalls increasing the level of humidity. The hill station looks sensuous in the rainy season.

Coimbatore Peelamdeu Airport situated at a distance of 70 kms from Coonoor is the nearest airport linking it to the major cities like Chennai and Bangalore.

Coonoor By Bus
One can easily get State owned bus service on a regular basis from Ooty, Coimbatore and other cities in TamilNadu which conveniently link it with Coonoor.

Coonoor By Train
Coimbatore located near the the hill station is a major junction which is linked with all the prime cities. There is also Nilgiri Mountain Railway Service available between Ooty and Mettupalaym having stoppage at Coonoor.
